Potent bacterial neuraminidase inhibitors, anthraquinone glucosides from Polygonum cuspidatum and their inhibitory mechanism.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE P. cuspidatum is a popular Chinese medicinal herb, having a long history of usage in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of several inflammatory diseases in the form of powders and decoctions. Similarly there are many reports that P. cuspidatum has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, both of which are properties associated with compounds having...

Intestinal bacterium Eubacterium cellulosolvens deglycosylates flavonoid C- and O-glucosides.

Eubacterium cellulosolvens cleaved the flavone C-glucosides homoorientin and isovitexin to their aglycones luteolin and apigenin, respectively. The corresponding isomers, orientin and vitexin, or other polyphenolic C-glucosides were not deglycosylated. E. cellulosolvens also cleaved several O-coupled glucosides of flavones and isoflavones to their corresponding aglycones.

Leufolins A and B, potent butyrylcholinesterase-inhibiting flavonoid glucosides from Leucas urticifolia.

New flavonoidal glucosides leufolins A (1) and B (2), have been isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the whole plants of Leucas urticifolia. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (1D and 2D NMR) spectral data. Both of these compounds exhibited significant inhibitory potential against the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase.

Constituents from Polygonum cuspidatum.

Two lignan sulfates, a stilbene derivative and a phenol sulfate, together with 10 known compounds, were isolated from an aqueous extract of the root of Polygonum cuspidatum. The new compounds were elucidated based on chemical evidence and spectroscopic techniques including two-dimensional NMR methods. They exhibited no inhibition of lipid peroxidation and no cytotoxic and DNA cleavage activities.

Chemical composition, antioxidant and anticancer effects of the seeds and leaves of indigo (Polygonum tinctorium Ait.) plant.

Seeds and leaves of indigo (Polygonum tinctorium Ait.) plant were investigated and compared with another medicinal plant named prolipid for their properties such as chemical composition, antioxidant, and anticancer effects by Fourier transform infrared, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization-MS in negative mode. It was found that polyphenols, flavonoids, and fl...
